Mind Training by Ravinder and Eldon Taylor

** Review **

"I am often skeptical when considering reading a self-help book about how to train your brain. Most are trite and devoid of science. Mind Training does an excellent job of blending psychology and brain science, in an easily readable fashion, making real change possible."

Larry D. Rosen, Professor Emeritus at California State University.

Mind Training

We know that exercising regularly will bring numerous benefits, from improved health and wellness to enhanced creativity, but most do not know that training the mind will bring a host of benefits too.

Mind Training examines how the brain works, including how it can create mechanical like habits, employ self-destructive behaviors, reward failure and more. It shows how consciousness is built upon unconscious processes and the kind of impact this can have. This mind exploration is carried out with a keen focus on how this information can be used to improve the quality of life by maximizing natural talents and abilities.

Mind Training presents a way of life that promotes a process of conscious living. Having an awareness of the ‘whys’ behind some of our behaviors will reduce many of the self-destructive patterns that all of us are subject to in certain areas of our lives. Understanding some of our brain chemistry mechanisms allows us to take some manual control to increase our successes and overall feelings of well-being. Discovering some of the automatic mind mechanisms makes it possible to offset the ability for others to exploit them.

Life educates your mind to accept less, thereby limiting and defining you. You can do it better. Drawing on over 200 solid scientific studies, Mind Training is the self-help workout regimen that will enhance every corner of your life.

Areas examined include Psychology, Self-Help, Self-Actualization, Self-Sabotage, Personal Power, Subliminal, Hypnosis, Meditation, Mindfulness, Affirmations, Happy Brain Chemicals, Illusions, Pygmalion Effect, Optimism vs Pessimism, Gratitude, and Spirituality.

** Review **

"If you want to get beyond wishy-washy feel goodism in your quest for insightful, self-determining, and authentic living, and if you seriously wish to enhance your life in a practical way informed by science-based principles, then this book is for you!”

~ Anthony Falikowski, author of Higher Reality Therapy and Experiencing Philosophy.

Ravinder says,

"We all have the desire to do better, to achieve more, to fly higher so to speak, but we all have insecurities imposed upon us. If there is not a healthy balance within and between the different aspects of our selves, conflicts can arise, self-destructive patterns can form, and disappointments can result. And much of this operates, without our awareness, on a subconscious level.

"Know this: You do not have to simply accept who you are for you have the power to create the person you want to be."

Eldon says,

"Many believe that self-help and self-improvement is about rags to riches, failure to success, and so forth, when indeed it's the beginning of a journey into self-discovery. Inside every human being is an eternal truth and a life purpose. Using our mind power is simply starting the engine on that path toward highest self-actualization."

Anthony Falikowski

Mind Training: The Science of Self-Empowerment is an excellent book that combines elements of brain science and theoretical research psychology with the practical applications of self-help programs designed to promote psychological health and more effective personal functioning. Deeper self-knowledge and understanding are gained by an examination of science-based principles exploring how the mind works. In a clear and concise way, co-authors Ravinder and Eldon Taylor offer the reader numerous opportunities for self-reflection and for applying self-empowering behavioral strategies using exercises contained in the book. If you want to get beyond wishy-washy feel goodism in your quest for insightful, self-determining, and authentic living, and if you seriously wish to enhance your life in a practical way informed by science-based principles, then this book is for you!”

— Anthony Falikowski, Professor at Sheridan College/Adjunct Professor York University (retired) and author of Higher Reality Therapy and Experiencing Philosophy.

Joel Weinberger

“What makes Mind Training different is that it is really based on research literature. It’s not just anecdotes and testimonials like most self-help books. Further, the research is described, not just referred to so that the reader can see what it actually says and how it is being applied. The advice is concrete and doable. The summary and exercises at the end of each chapter are well thought out and flow from what is explained in the chapter.

Mind Training also says that this is not an easy fix. Many self-help books make is seem that all you must do is read the advice and all is good. Mind Training makes it more realistic and therefore more valid. I especially like the discussion of placebo as a valuable tool as opposed to something that needs to be controlled for and eliminated. That view in the literature has irritated me for decades and I have written about it. Eliminating something that works because we don’t quite understand how is ludicrous. I applaud this work for saying that and offering an understanding of it. I also like that Mind Training covers the emotional Stroop; most people and most reviews do not discuss it. I think that most are not aware of it.

“Finally, the discussion of breaking down major goals into small steps or subgoals, along with the review of subliminal research in the appendix, are both particularly good.”

— Joel Weinberger, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Adelphi University, NY, and author of The Unconscious: Theory, Research, and Clinical Implications.

Larry Rosen

“I am often skeptical when considering reading a self-help book about how to train your brain. Most are trite and devoid of science. Mind Training does an excellent job of blending psychology and brain science, in an easily readable fashion, making real change possible.”

— Larry D. Rosen, Professor Emeritus at California State University, Dominguez Hills and co-author of The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World, 2017 PROSE Award winner for Biomedicine and Neuroscience.

Thomas G. Plante

“In Mind Training: The Science of Self-Empowerment by Ravinder and Eldon Taylor, we are reminded through a thoughtful, readable, and evidence based scientific approach that we have much more control over our mind than most of us give ourselves credit for. The book highlights how we can maximize our mind’s potential and provides a road map to a better way to live and hopefully both thrive and flourish.”

— Thomas G. Plante, Ph.D., ABPP, Augustin Cardinal Bea, S.J. University Professor, and Professor of Psychology, Santa Clara University and Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine

Catherine A. Sanderson

“We all want to be happier, and yet for many of us, the path to happiness is hard to find. Mind Training: The Science of Self-Empowerment provides practical strategies, based in empirical scientific research, to guide readers in how to make positive changes in their lives. This book informs readers about the power of the mind and gives specific techniques for taking control of their thoughts in order to live happier, healthier lives.”

— Catherine A. Sanderson, Professor of Psychology, Amherst College, MA, and author of Why We Act.

Loretta Breuning

“Most of our brain’s activity does not take the form of conscious, verbal thoughts, so it’s great to know that so much research has been done on these subconscious processes. This book gathers a broad array of that research, so we can better trace and master our own mental activity. The variety of approaches makes it easy for the reader to pull on the threads that best help them find their power over their own subconscious mind.”

— Loretta Breuning, Ph.D., Professor of Management at California State University, and author of Habits of a Happy Brain

Lisa McCourt

“Absolutely brilliant explanation for why we humans think and act as we do! Having long been in the business of joy and happiness, I often allude to the mechanics of our minds and the many ways they’re simply not set up in favor of our sustainable joy. Now I finally have a comprehensive manual to recommend for thoroughly understanding and overriding this inconvenient aspect of our humanness! Thank you, Ravinder and Eldon, for your tireless contributions that shed light on these powerful truths, and for all you continue to do to move humanity in the direction of clarity, compassion, and higher consciousness!”

— Lisa McCourt, author of Free Your Joy and other books that have sold over 9 million copies.
