Mastering the Good Luck Paradigm

Why are some people just ‘plain downright lucky’ whereas others seem to spend all of their time in a quagmire of misfortune? And, even more importantly, is it possible to create good luck?

Prepare Your Mind for Good Luck!

The Many Faces of Luck

There was a time in my life that good luck was simply a matter of chance, but then my life experience showed me something different. I remember being with a friend/colleague when we were asked to purchase tickets for a lottery. The lottery was a fund-raiser for a cause I believed in, so I dutifully purchased my tickets with zero expectation of winning—I never won with these things. However, my friend expressed great reluctance about purchasing tickets, not because she did not believe in the cause, but rather because, as she said, “I always win and I get so embarrassed going up to claim my prize.” At the time, I thought this was just a strange thing to say and thought nothing of it . . . until the drawing took place and I accompanied her to claim her prize!

On the flip side of this, I certainly know people who seem to attract bad luck all of the time. I have another friend who certainly fits into the category of ‘the best of the best!’ She is sweet and kind hearted and always very helpful. If anyone deserves good luck, it is she. However, bad luck seems to follow her everywhere and I was constantly hearing about some opportunity she had to pass by because of various family situations—family situations that did not hold back her siblings at all!

Then of course, there are those who were just born lucky. Some have parents who are very wealthy and so could afford to purchase the best of opportunities. Others are born with some amazing talent/ability that just opened doors and made life smooth sailing for them. However, if you stop to think about this, we all know of a significant number of celebrities whose lives just seem to blow up. They had some amazing talent, but they were unable to translate this into the creation of a good, happy, and healthy life!

Recognizing Good Fortune

Personally, I think there are a number of aspects to good luck. The first is of course to believe in yourself—you must believe that you deserve good luck. If you do not have a strong sense of self-worth, then even if good luck should visit you, you will find a way to sabotage it. Also, when you believe that you deserve good luck, you are much more likely to see it when it does appear.

This reminds me of the story that has been shared numerous times on line, where a man of faith is caught up in a huge flood. Standing on the roof of his house, he just knows that God will save him. When a boat appears, he sees that it is already very full. Fearing that it might sink if he were to climb in, he turns it away—surely God can find a safer way to help him out of his predicament. Next, a helicopter flies by and lets down a ladder for him. However, the wind is incredibly gusty and the man is too afraid to even start climbing up—what if he is unable to hold on? Eventually he drowns and on the other side, he meets God. When he asks God why he did not save him, God replies,“My son, I sent you a boat and then a helicopter but you sent them both away!” How many boats and helicopters have appeared in your life only for you not to recognize your good fortune?

Be Prepared

Another important aspect to achieving a life full of good luck is simply in being prepared when it does appear. Eldon often says that “Good luck is opportunity meeting preparedness,” and that just makes so much sense to me.  Do you have the appropriate educational background so that when that dream job appears, you can accept it? Are you sufficiently happy and whole in yourself, so that when the perfect partner appears you not only see it and allow them in, but you also have the ability to form a strong and healthy union? Have you planned for that unexpected windfall so you can make the most of the extra money rather than waste it on the item that is foremost in your mind at the time, only to wish you had saved it for the item that you really want/need?

Power of Positive Thinking

And then of course there is simply the power of positive thinking—what you expect you get! While I don’t believe in sitting back and simply waiting for good things to appear, there is a lot to be said for forming the perfect image of success in your mind. Regardless of whether this enables me to attract good fortune, or it provides me with a road map so that I can focus my energy in the most appropriate direction, I have found that this technique significantly increases the odds of success in my favor.
